2015 NCBA Scholarship Application

ncba_logoThe Student Scholarship provides an award of $500 for tuition to a North Carolina resident enrolled in a North Carolina Qualified Paralegal Studies Program as defined by the North Carolina State Bar. Durham Technical Community College meets that requirement. The scholarship will be paid directly to the school. The Scholarship Application period is open through March 31, 2015; applications must be postmarked by March 31, 2015.

To qualify, you must:

1. Be a North Carolina resident enrolled in a North Carolina Qualified Paralegal Studies Program as defined by the North Carolina State Bar;

2. Be a North Carolina Bar Association Paralegal Division Student Member in good standing. Applications must be postmarked on or before the deadline for submission of the scholarship application. Membership will be verified. Applications are available at and student membership is FREE.

3. Submit a signed Certificate of Good Academic Standing from your school (the form is included with this application);

4. Provide a sealed Letter of Recommendation from your paralegal program advisor OR from a current or past instructor within your paralegal program; and

5. Submit an essay on “What do you think a day in the life of a paralegal looks like?” All essays must be 1,000 to 1,500 words in length and typewritten. Grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and flow will be considered.

Inclement Weather Policy

Freezing rain is in the forecast for Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, creating the probability of slick roads and power outages. Before venturing out Wednesday morning, please check first to see if the college is open. and as always, make safety your priority.

So how does Durham Tech communicate whether the doors will be open? There are two ways, according to the Durham Tech Inclement Weather page:

1. Through the college’s website at, Durham Tech Twitter and Facebook, the college’s main phone number of 919-536-7200, and Sakai.

2. Notifying the following local media outlets:
Television: FOX 50, WTVD, WRAL, WNCN, News Channel 14, WUVC-TV, and Univision.

Managing Your Progress

Welcome back, students! Your first week of Spring 2015 is underway. You may not realize it, but you have one more addition to your schedule: time each week spent managing your progress. Treat it as another half hour or so of work each week, though most of the time it will just require a few minutes of honest assessment and jotting down notes.

Managing your progress means staying on top of your financial aid, evaluating your progress with regards to your goals, staying on top of your progress in your current classes, keeping track of your graduation requirements, and getting your portfolio in shape.

Here’s the cool part. Each week, as you look at your progress, you’ll see gains. Don’t forget to acknowledge your accomplishments and victories—both great and small—each week!

Here are some tips from faculty and staff on how to keep moving forward:

1. Don’t procrastinate. Need help? Check out this site.


2. Be proactive. If you have a problem, stop and fix it. Get help before a little issue grows up into a big one.

3. Be positive. Surround yourself with positive people. Avoid drama. As Bruce Lee said, “As you think, so shall you become.”


Spring Semester Bookstore Charge Dates

Welcome back, students! The Durham Tech bookstore reopens today. Financial aid and Voucher charge dates are January 8 through January 23. The last day for refunds is January 23. Bookstore hours are Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. All the details including buyback hours can be found on the Durham Tech bookstore page.
