Senate’s Budget Proposal May Slash Court Reporter Services

30 May

As North Carolina legislators search for ways to pare down the state budget, the state’s courts–and court reporters–are facing the possibility of severe funding cuts. The consequences may affect more than just jobs. Proponents of the budget cuts argue that using modern recording technology and contractors will save money. However, opponents are warning that reducing the number of reporters and relying on technology may create serious problems in courtrooms around the state.

NC Policy Watch’s Sharon McCloskey does a great job of explaining why court reporters are invaluable. WRAL-TV interviews court reporters in this story.
