Reminder: April 1 Deadline to Apply for NALA Exam

Monday, April 1st is the deadline to have your application in for the May NALA exam.

NALA’s guidelines for applying for the exam can be found here. If you apply online you have the option of paying by credit card; otherwise you’ll need to send a money order, certified check, or firm check. Late applications will be taken through April 10th with a $25 late fee assessed.

Deadline for 2014 Scholarships Approaching!

Paralegal Club Meeting – April 2, 2013

The Paralegal Club will hold a general meeting and feature a guest speaker on Tuesday, April 2 at 3 PM in room 50 of  the White building.  Kelly A. Farrow, CP, NCCP, is Assistant Director of Paralegal Certification for the NC State Bar. She’ll cover topics including the State Bar certification exam and what it means to be a certified paralegal.

Snacks will be served after the presentation.

 

NC Bar Association Paralegal Scholarship Available

The Student Scholarship provides an award of $500 for tuition to a North Carolina resident enrolled in a North Carolina Qualified Paralegal Studies Program as defined by the North Carolina State Bar. The application packet is available here (pdf).

The complete scholarship package is valued at $800 and includes:

Paralegal Division Membership (2013-2014)

Any Section Membership (2013-2014)

Registration for the 2013 Paralegal Division Annual Meeting and Seminar

A CLE/CPE Passport to attend eligible programs tuition free

Up to $100 travel expense reimbursement

Requirements:

1. Be a North Carolina resident enrolled in a North Carolina Qualified Paralegal Studies Program as defined by the North Carolina State Bar;

2. Be a North Carolina Bar Association Paralegal Division Student Member in good standing;

3. Submit a signed Certificate of Good Academic Standing (form included with application packet) from your school verifying you are in good academic standing as defined by your school;

4. Provide a sealed Letter of Recommendation from your paralegal program advisor OR from a current or past instructor within your paralegal program; and

5. Submit an essay on “Will you pursue certification as a North Carolina State Bar Certified Paralegal? Why or why not?” All essays must be 1,000 to 1,500 words in length and typewritten. Grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and flow will be considered.

The deadline is April 5, 2013. Scholarships will be awarded by May 9, 2013.

NALA Exam Application – Online

NALA exam applications are due by April 1st. Whether you send in your application or apply online, you’ll need to include the applicable information regarding your education.

“If you complete the form on-line – you will still need to send information to NALA Headquarters to complete the application. This includes official transcripts showing the date of completion of your formal education, and original signed attestations from your attorney/employer or school official.” – NALA

Click here to visit the NALA exam application page which includes the online form. If you fill out the online form and indicate that you are paying online with a credit card, once you hit “submit” another window will open that will provide instructions for payment via a secured web site.

There are three categories of applicant:

Category 1: Completion of a paralegal education program

Category 2: A bachelor’s degree in any field plus one year’s experience or paralegal education

Category 3: Seven years’ experience as a paralegal

The most common category for DTCC students will most likely be Categories 1 and 2; they are the first two pages of the application form.

The NALA fees are $250 for members, $275 for non-members. Remember that the Durham Tech testing site fees are $30 and paid at Durham Tech by May 3rd. See Joe Donnan for details on when the business office in the White Building will be set up to receive this payment.$250 Members; $275 Non-members

NCBA Paralegal Division Career Fair – June 14, 2013

The North Carolina Bar Association Paralegal Division’s 2013 Career Fair is Friday, June 14, 2013 from 1:oo to 4:00pm.
Participating in this event will provide you with an opportunity to:- Learn of hiring practices, desired skills and recruiting cycles of area law firms, corporations and/or government agencies
– Educate attendees on your firm’s hiring practices or organization’s requirements, desired skills and recruiting cycles
– Submit your resume for full and/or part-time paralegal openings or internships
– Receive paralegal professional development and mentoring opportunities
– Network with other area paralegals, law firms and business
