NALA Certification Exam Tentatively Scheduled for May at DTCC

The Spring 2013 testing date is tentatively scheduled for May 17-18, 2013. Testing is expected to take place in Room 48 of the White Building. Testing Center examination fees are $35. NALA’s fee schedule can be found here.

Job Announcement: Bilingual Community Educator/Paralegal II
Legal Aid of North Carolina – Durham, NC

Background:
Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC) is seeking a full-time, bilingual Community Educator and Paralegal to support its Medical-Legal Partnership program. This project brings together physicians, nurses, social workers, attorneys and paralegals to address the social and environmental determinants of health, including: substandard housing conditions; domestic violence; food, income, and housing insecurity; and improper denials of public benefits.

Responsibilities & Duties:
The paralegal will provide administrative and legal support to the Medical-Legal Partnership program and the Durham office of Legal Aid of North Carolina. The paralegal will interview patients referred through the MLP to determine if they are eligible for LANC’s services, will hold regular (usually weekly or bi-weekly) office hours in MLP clinics, and will work directly with MLP clients and other Spanish-speaking applicants and clients who are served by the Durham office. After training, the paralegal may counsel and represent clients in  administrative matters under supervision of an attorney, and perform other related responsibilities. The bounds of responsibility will be determined by the selected candidate’s abilities, judgment, and initiative.

Qualifications:
Must be fluent in Spanish and English. Must be a college graduate, an effective writer, and an effective communicator in meetings and training settings. Must be well organized and possess the judgment and ability to make decisions, carry out project duties, and accomplish project goals as a part of a team. Must be an experienced and zealous organizer and advocate with a demonstrated commitment to improving the conditions confronting low-income families and children. The selected applicant must possess a NC Driver’s License and reliable transportation, as travel through the seven-county service area will be required.

Salary:
$27,000+D.O.E. Excellent benefits package.

NCBA Scholarship Opportunity

From the NCBA:

The Student Scholarship provides an award of $500 for tuition to a North Carolina resident enrolled in a North Carolina Qualified Paralegal Studies Program as defined by the North Carolina State Bar.

The criteria:

1. Be a North Carolina resident enrolled in a North Carolina Qualified Paralegal Studies Program as defined by the North Carolina State Bar;

2. Be a North Carolina Bar Association Paralegal Division Student Member in good standing;

3. Submit a signed Certificate of Good Academic Standing (form included with application packet) from your school verifying you are in good academic standing as defined by your school;

4. Provide a sealed Letter of Recommendation from your paralegal program advisor OR from a current or past instructor within your paralegal program; and

5. Submit an essay on “Will you pursue certification as a North Carolina State Bar Certified Paralegal? Why or why not?” All essays must be 1,000 to 1,500 words in length and typewritten. Grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and flow will be considered.
